黎巴嫩危機
當我正在危地馬拉城，與幾位當地同業喝着咖啡，討論中美洲政治時，咖啡廳裏的電視新聞突然傳來一陣爆炸聲，報道員大聲讀出︰「貝魯特國際機場受到以色列空襲！」
大家都嚇呆了，一個國家的民用機場突然成為襲擊目標，如果這不叫做恐怖襲擊，那又是甚麼呢？
我的感覺是，這與「九一一」有分別嗎？兩架飛機穿過世貿大樓，無辜平民百姓防不勝防，這與以色列戰機在貝魯特機場上空投下導彈，之前毫無警告，簡直是如出一轍。我可以想像，正在機場等候上機、下機的無辜乘客，是如何的惶恐不安！
以色列也夠野蠻，在別人主權領土上可以來去自如，要做甚麼就做甚麼，無視國際法。
危地馬拉的同業知道我曾到過黎巴嫩，很有興趣多了解該國的情況，畢竟中東離他們很遠，而他們為自己國家的問題已經夠煩了，實在沒有精力理會其他事情。其中一位抽煙不斷，他表示煙是戒不掉了，在危國，每個人都面對很大的壓力，每個人都活在恐懼中。
三十六年的內戰，徹底把危地馬拉變成一個充滿暴力、神經兮兮的國家，內戰的噩夢仍然纏擾不斷，他們好奇問我，黎巴嫩人是怎樣從戰爭中活過來的？
我墮入沉思之中，心裏實在難過。年前到貝魯特，機場內雖然擠滿了人，但他們很快就排成一行一行的隊伍，黎巴嫩人渴望在混亂中仍然可以尋找秩序。
真主黨在黎巴嫩有市場的原因，就是因為黎國的領土仍然受到威脅，仍然有戰爭的危險，可是，黎國人追求和平的決心，令到真主黨的支持率近年已有所下降。
走在貝魯特，有一點令我十分感動的，就是他們用雙手很快把頹垣敗瓦的城市重建起來，而且不大喜歡我與他們談起戰爭。他們希望我看到黎巴嫩光明的一面，他們不要活在黑暗裏。
但，真主黨要戰爭，以色列也要戰爭，兩、三個士兵受襲便可以立刻挑動干戈。

I came across your blog via a link from my good friend Cathy's blog. Remember the book 'Pity the Nation'? I read that book when I was in Lebanon in 1998, and indeed the sufferings of the Lebanese filled my heart with pity. When I was there the reconstruction of Lebanon was still in its early stage -- many buildings and roads were still in ruins but I could see a sign of hope and the energy of rebuilding the country for a better future everywhere. I have a lot of Arab colleagues and some of them have become my good friends. Looking at what's going on in both Lebanon and the occupied terrorities, I feel the world has lost its sense on what's right and what's wrong. And those so-called leaders of the international community are not telling the obvious. The attacks on civilians and basic infrastructure in Lebanon constitute are obviously against both international law and int'l humantarian law. It is an act of agreession against another sovereign country, in breach of the UN Charter and sufficient to trigger chapter 7 sanctions and international intervention.... But as we can see, none of the world leaders is pointing out that the emperor has no cloth. Closer to home, it's like your neighbours have chosen to fight at your home, destroying things you treasure and took years to build, harming your family and taking away your hope and plan for a brigther future. I sometimes write commentary pieces on int'l affairs I feel strongly about. But lately I've been pre-occupied by a project I need to finish and hence haven't written much. So I think I drop a few lines in your blog to share my thoughts. You're doing good work. Keep it up. Esther

難得看到有人關心, 中東距離我們實在太遙遠, 媒體又受英美的觀點左右. 看到以色列大剌剌地說攻打黎巴嫩是為了幫助黎巴嫩政府掃蕩恐怖份子, 就很想砸螢幕。周圍的黎巴嫩友人一個比一個苦, 每天盯著電腦看新聞, 書也不想念, 他們的家人還在黎巴嫩, 每天為了躲空襲, 都得躲在避難室, 再打下去糧食都成問題。怎麼會有如此的霸道的國家, 摧毀鄰國的國際機場, 發電廠, infrastructure, 造成數百平民死傷, 還說是幫了鄰國政府的忙, 真是無恥到極點。布希還給了green light, 說以色列有權防衛自己... 美國的態度連帶影響了西方國家, 聯合國也毫無作為, 黎巴嫩只有挨打的份, 等到哪一天以色列打夠了為止, 這個國家也毀了...
